Improving education and research

Stifterverband is a joint initiative started by companies and foundations and an advocate for excellent universities, cutting-edge research and the development of talent in Germany. It also provides advice and support to more than 640 non-profit foundations with total assets of more than EUR 2.7 billion, of which around EUR 150 million is channelled into charity work every year.

More than 3,000 companies, foundations and private individuals – including Linde – have joined forces for this purpose. Together, we are Germany’s largest private sponsor of education and science.

One representative project is the education initiative known as “Zukunft machen” [forging the future], designed to run until 2020. The demographic development in Germany provides the backdrop to the initiative: the absolute number of graduates is dropping. At the same time, the business world needs highly qualified graduates, especially in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Through its education initiative, Stifterverband is active in six key fields of action, one of which is equal opportunity. Compared to children of parents with a university degree, children of parents who did not study at university or who have a migration background are still much less likely to attend university. One of the education initiative’s objectives is therefore to increase the prospects of successfully pursuing a degree – and with it, the number of qualified graduates.

All of Stifterverband’s activities are financed through donations from members and sponsors. This guarantees Stifterverband’s independence and enables it to support projects that stand little chance of being publicly financed.

Our contribution

Our products are the result of scientific and technical research, which is why promoting the competitiveness of science and education in Germany is particularly important to us. Not least, qualified employees also form the basis of our success. Linde provides Stifterverband with financial resources every year. Executives from Linde are represented in Stifterverband working groups.
